How to make Romanian Point: step by step 1. First of all, Alina gets the patterns or motives from laces she has seen or from a friend. She copies them with tracing paper and corrects the parts which are in bad condition, broken or need to be modified. 2. Using carbon paper, she copies the pattern on a thick piece of material. It is important that the material is coarse and rigid, as it will be the support for the work. Then she draws the motif on the material with a ball pen. 3. Afterwards, she starts making a cord with a crochet hook. There are different types of cords, using different stitches. I would say it is a kind of very complicated chain. She forms a ball with the chain, whose length depends on the lace she is going to make. 4. Next she sews the cord to the material with a contrasting colour thread, following the line she has previously drawn. She uses a normal length needle for this. Where she needs to cut the cord, she cuts it and sews it carefully to prevent it from undoing. 5. Finally she making the needle work. She uses now a very fine and long needle. With this needle she fills the spaces (petals, leaves or other forms) with the desired stitch. This stitch is made in the air, that is, it has not to be sewn to the material. The material only serves as a support. The thread used for this fillings is finer than the one used for the cord. And the thread is a kind of cotton, called "macramé" in Romania. Once the work is finished, she irons it on the wrong side. And to finish it all, she cuts the contrasting thread to loosen the lace from the material. |
