Bobbins, patterns and laces from Gabina Pérez. Unfortunately I know little about this lacer who lived in Medina del Campo, a village near Valladolid at the end of the 19th century. But seeing all the patterns and bobbins she had, and the beautiful laces she made, makes me guess that she was a very good lacer and also very active. She was and aunt of my friend's grandmother (¡uh!). My friend has recently inherited her lacing belongings (as nobody else seemed to be interested in them!), and we want to share these with you.
The origin of the above bobbins is still a mystery to me. They are not Spanish bobbins. Perhaps somebody bought them for her in another country (France perhaps?), or she traveled to this country and bought them herself... I would appreciate very much if somebody can identify them and give me some information. They measure 12 cm.
These are our traditional bobbins: these are made of lemon tree wood and measure 11 cm. Gabina has left a collection of over 120 of these bobbins.
These are hand drawn over a hard cardboard and then painted in a brownish colour (except the yellow one on top). They are not Spanish; they look French to me.
These are our typical Spanish prickings: using a red cardboard. The copies of an original bought pattern are afterwards made pricking through it on a normal grey hard paper or cardboard, whatever was on hand. And this pattern was probably taken from a magazine. Again, information about this pattern would be very much appreciated. Images of the laces made by Gabina will come soon. |
