"Mi pequeño taller" (Antje's workshop) Learning how to make bobbin lace is not difficult. It is easy to find someone who wants and knows how to teach you the first basic steps. But it is difficult to find someone who knows how to teach you more advanced and complicated techniques. It is also not so easy to make an impecable and perfect lace. I like making bobbinlace because it causes a constant interest to learn more and more. You never seem to know everything about it. The more we learn, the more we know that there is still a lot to be learnt: that there are other ways of working, other stitches to make, other materials to use, other books to read... And the curiosity for learning all this is what led me to try to find people with my same interest. As soon as I managed to assemble a group of five, we decided to create "Mi pequeño taller" (Mi little workshop), which is working since 2003.
We meet every Monday evening at my home. We decide together what we are going to do next. We search in our books and magazines for a pattern which we especially like or find interesting (always small works which we can finish in two sessions or three), and start working. Usually we use different sizes of thread, or different colours, we give different solutions to the difficult points... and finally we end up with very different laces. The experience is marvelous. We are not only a working group, but also a group of colleagues and good friends. We enjoy every Monday afternoon and are looking forward to the next one in order to meet again and continue our work. At this very moment we are working a Russian tape lace edging whose pattern we found in the Internet and that we find really complicated. It is an unknown motive for us and it is being very interesting to see how we are solving the "obstacles" we meet every time we make a curve.
I encourage all lacers who want to learn more and don't have a teacher nearby to try to find a group of colleagues with the same interests, so that you can all together search and work. |
