At the centre of the extensive province of Jaen is the district of La Loma, which is full of places of interest, but La Loma is above all Ubeda and Baeza, two towns sparated by scarcely nine kilometres, which together posses a great wealth of monuments.

Hospital of Santiago (Úbeda)

A visit to Ubeda should begin in the large Vazquez Molina Square to ensure full appreciation of all the artistic splendour contained in the town. There is El Salvador, another great work by Valdelvira, the Las Cadenas Palace, the extremely complex but evocative Church of Santa María de los Alcázares, none of which are out of place in this longe square, which also features the Parador del Condestable Dávalos State Hotel and the Palace of the Marquis of Mancera, vicerroy of Peru. Ubeda is full of beautiful palaces, many of them boasting towers - Los Salvajes House, Guadiana Palace, Vela de Los Cobos Palace - ,although the most impressive feature of the building hailed as the House of the Towers is the Plateresque filigree facade.

Ubeda is also full of Gothic, Plateresque and Baroque churches, such as San Pablo, La Trinidad, San Nicolás. Although there is no shotage of Arab remains, such as the Rosal Gateway, nor of Mudejar buildings, such as the one which houses the Arqueological Museum, the true character of the city lies in its Renaissance constructions, including the vast Santiago Hospital, whose towers dominate the skyline in a town withsuch a profusion of towers. In another corner of the town is the San Juan de la Cruz oratory, with its small museum, which remaind us that the saint, to whom there is also a monument in a nearby square, came to die in this town.

Santa María Fontain
(Baeza)

Baeza: Tower of the old Cathedral, the latter a large building of Gothic design, with Gotic cloisters and curiosities such as the Mudejar Luna Gateway. Church of Santa Cruz, Jabalquinto Palace. Santa María Fontain. Old University. Pópulo Square, Town Hall , Convent of San Francisco, Counts of Garcíez Palace , Mendoza, and Elorza. Towers such as Aliatares.

Cazorla: To the east of La Loma is situated the Nature Reserve of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, the largest in Spain. Here where the sources of the Guadalquivir and the Segura Rivers are to be found, Nature has been generous. Amongst vast pine forest, clear, winding rivers, there is a variety of animal life from the mountain goat and the moufflon to the wild boar and the fallow deer, not forgetting of course the sparrow hawk and the goshawk, and a no less varied plant life, with such popular species as the Cazorla violet, several species of narcissus and of course enormous rosebushes, orchids and gladioluses.

Others interesting places: Canena, Jaén, Torreperogil, Iznatoraf, Linares.
