THE PRINTERS OF VENEZUELA STAMPS

Main Sources of Information:

Venezuelan first postage stamps were issued in 1859:

Stamp printing for Venezuela is primarily done at the U.S.A. by an unknown printer

On June 15, 1858, Miguel Herrera (secretary of Treasury), writes to Dr. José María Rojas (in New York) to order the elaboration of the corresponding matrixes. He said to Dr. Rojas that had decided not to lithograph in Venezuela the stamps (provisional not emitted) projected to circulate between August 1st. and December 31 of 1858. Herrera asked to make the shipment of the whole requested material in the two following months. And Rojas - for own initiative - solved to order to manufacture the matrixes and to lithograph an enough quantity of stamps, remitting them perfectly capable to be used. In this way, on October 3, the first stamps and their matrixes came out from Philadelphia, with the captain Wilson; on board of the boat "Joseph Maxwell". After all the bureaucratic steps... December 4, José Márquez Salcedo (Director of Mail) received the stamps of the first emission. (source: Pedro José Dib Espejo, Cuadernos LAGOVEN, 1990 - Pages 85 to 87)

There were 199300 stamps of 1/2 real (Scott 1), 200000 of 1 real (Scott 2) and 101000 of 2 reales (Scott 3). First Day: January 1,1859.
